Itchiness in Dogs

Cat and dog itchy skin can sometimes be because of mange. Both dogs and cats that are affected by mites may start to itch and scratch as the mites burrow into their skin.

Cat mange is caused by Notoedres cati mites. These mites can be transferred to dogs in your home but they aren't usually the cause of mange in dogs.

Both Demodex mites and Sarcoptes mites can cause mange on dogs. There are three species of mites that can commonly be found on dogs.

These are:

Sarcoptes mites

Demodex mites

Ear mites

Demodex mites can what is known as demodectic mange. Sarcoptes mites cause sarcoptic mange.

Both types of mange can affect the condition of your dog's coat. For example, Sarcoptes mites burrow into your dog's skin. That makes them itch and can make them more prone to infections.
